Microsoft Fires Back: PS3 can’t catch 360

by Brian Allen on Jan 28, 2009 at 09:40 PM

Sony logoThe smack talk between Microsoft and Sony executives is reaching pro wrestling proportions.

First Sony Computer Entertainment Head Kaz Hirai said the Xbox 360 lacks longevity and that there was “no way” Microsoft will have a bigger install base at the end of the console war than Sony’s PlayStation 3. Hirai made some curious comments about the Nintendo Wii, saying he doesn’t consider it a competitor.

“They’re a different world and we operate in our world,” he said of the ridiculously successful Nintendo Wii to Official PlayStation Magazine. Yeah, Hirai’s in a different world with those comments alright.

But Microsoft wasn’t about to let Sony’s dig go unanswered. Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, chastised Sony for being a hardware company that’s “complacent” in its market position in an interview with The Bitbag.  Greenberg then engaged in some questionable logic of his own, saying that even if you double current PS3 sales and 360 sales remain flat Sony couldn’t close the gap until 2014.

Those of us in the gaming media love a little bit of trash talk, but it’s just funny to see how confident these guys are when Nintendo is putting the boots to both of them. They’re both pretending that Nintendo’s cute little console isn’t even in the race and that it’s just the big boys Sony and Microsoft in a battle to the death. Considering the failure rate of the 360, it’s pretty ludicrous for Microsoft to think Sony can’t possibly catch it. As we’ve mentioned, analysts including Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter certainly think it can be done.

Likewise, Hirai’s talking a pretty fair amount of the trash for the company in third place. This would be akin to team that lost the AFC Championship declaring there’s “no way” anyone but them could possibly win the next Super Bowl. But we’re all really enjoying the posing and posturing and I’m betting it doesn’t end.
I might even say there’s “no way” Microsoft and Sony will stop behaving like this anytime soon.
