Michael Phelps to follow in the footsteps of Tiger Woods and Shaun White
Its typical to see sports video games with a famous athlete’s name in the title. Perhaps it is designed to make the title seem more credible or authentic, since the virtual representation of a famous person is in the game or lends his or her name to the title. And really, it isn’t all that unexpected to see a pro golfer, football player or snowboarding star appear above a game.
On the other hand, it is a bit unexpected to see a swimmer appear there. But one will in 2010 - Michael Phelps. 505 Games, which was previously known for releasing games in Europe but has recently created a base of operations in L.A, is going to be making Michael Phelps games for both next gen consoles and the iPhone. I bet you can’t wait to play a swimming game on your iPhone. The press release does not state what consoles will be receiving the Phelps game.
There is an interesting side note to this announcement. A portion of the profits from the Michael Phelps video games will go to the Michael Phelps Foundation. When Speedo gave Phelps a $1,000,000 for getting eight gold medals, he announced that he was going to put the money towards a swimming charity. The first program for MPF is called Dream, Plan, Reach, and is an eight city tour that will teach kids how to accomplish their dreams and lead fufilling and active lives. The exact donation amount has not yet been announced.
