In 1981, Metallica was formed. In 1983, they came out with their first album, Kill ‘Em All. The album also featured the first of what would be multiple lineup changes in their evolution. More than 20 years later, Metallica is still going strong and, much like Aerosmith, are coming out with their first game.
The game is being worked on with the makers of Guitar Hero. A Digital Trends article reported that in a proxy statement submitted to the Security and Exchange Commission, Activision revealed plans for its next full band Guitar Hero game (early 2009). That game is featuring none other than the metal madmen known as Metallica. It is rumored that the game will follow the same premise as upcoming Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (Summer 2008) where you will take the role of one of the members of the band through its rise to into music power.
Metallica’s history is one that is rife with different problems that, at one time or another, hindered their progress. Ron McGovney and Dave Mustaine were first thrown out of the band: McGovney for not doing much in the way of contributing and Mustaine for violent behavior and the drug/alcohol abuse that would see Mustaine through multiple trips to rehab and one near-death experience before he finally kicked his habits. The next problem was when the bassist Cliff Burton died on a tour of Sweden in a bus rollover. There’s also the time when James Hetfield was set on fire onstage because of a mistake with pyrotechnics. We all remember the Napster controversy that turned off their fans, including some die-hard fans. There is also the alcohol abuse that lead to the band being dubbed “Alcohollica.” There is tons of material to document the struggles of the band and make a good game that’s based of their story.
The band started making concessions to its fans in regards to some things that lead to some abandoning the Metallica fanbase. These are being willing to upload their music to the iTunes online store and to the new, revamped Napster. They have also been working on a studio album as well that addresses the complaints that were brought up by fans who didn’t like their last studio album St. Anger.
This game should be a good gift Metallica fans who are also gamers that can afford upgrading into the newest consoles, if they haven’t upgraded yet. With Activision planning to release Guitar Hero IV and Call of Duty5, too, gamers have quite a bit too look out for.
