Mass Misinterpretation: Jaffe *not*  champion of single console crusade

by Lucy Newman on Jan 17, 2008 at 07:03 AM

david jaffeThe idea of a one console gaming system in the future has been drawing mixed reactions across the internet lately.

The creator of God of War, David Jaffe, started a blog asking readers why having a one console system is a bad idea. Nothing wrong in that. The single system debate that has been circulating the web since October 19, 2007, when EA’s Gerhard Florin told BBC News that having one console gaming system would make it easier on game developers having to create compatible copies of their games for multiple systems.

The focus on Jaffe’s blogby other sites Criminal Crackdown  has drawn even more readers to it.

In Jaffe’s blog, he asks:

“Can anyone explain to me how having ONE console would be bad for gamers? Or game developers for that matter? The argument that keeps coming up is, ‘oh, it would stifle competition and competition is good for gamers!’ But I don’t understand this in regards to console hardware.”

Challenging his readers to explain or discuss how having one system could either benefit or harm the gamers. Somehow, many of the headlines on the internet paint Jaffe as an advocate or supporter of the one console game system idea, leading to even more blog posts questioning Jaffe’s original post.

I’m not going to post the nitty gritty parts of the blog, but I can see how readers may have misunderstood what Jaffe was trying to say in his post, so he clarified a few things in his most recent edit. The first clarification being the confusion over what Jaffe was trying to make a point about.

“As many have pointed out, I am arguing for a single standard not a single console. Thanks for clarifying and helping me express it better.”

Chris Kohler left a post for Jaffe accepting his challenge with a link to his own blog on Wired where he explains why the idea would never work.

“Jaffe makes some passionate arguments about why it would be good for consumers and the industry. But it’s not going to happen. And to try to force it would be foolish for any companies that tried. That said, on the matter of the “one standardized hardware,” Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft all agree with David Jaffe. They all believe in, and are dedicating all of their business acumen to the goal of, having one single videogame console on the market. Thing is, they all want it to be their console.”

Both seem to be valid points, but as news of the blog post make its way across the internet. Flamers were bound to find it and wreak havoc. Jaffe’s blog page which was initially started as a discussion topic for his regular readers. Just reading the comments left, one could clearly see that while some agree and explained how the concept was a great idea there were others who disagreed and their reason in a healthy debate of sorts.

As a result of the latest volley of attacks on the site led Jaffe to create a videoblog asking news sites to stop posting Jaffe as the champion of one console systems and to ask those who have been flaming other bloggers for having a different opinion to stop the hateful comments they leave behind. (Which Jaffe removed from the comment page.)

Warning, video may contain strong language. If your easily offended by cursing you may not want to watch the video.
