Marvel vs. Capcom 2 hits Xbox Live July 29, 2009

Gonna take ya for a ri—i-ii-de!

Sorry. Ever since I heard the news that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was coming to current gen consoles, I cannot get the soundtrack for the game out of my head. Capcom has confirmed the acclaimed fighter will be available July 29, 2009, on Xbox Live Arcade for 1,200 Microsoft Points (US$15). The game is also coming to the PlayStation Network but and official date has not yet been announced.

One of the hardest parts of creating a fighting game is coming up with a cast of characters that will make players across the globe want to Hurricane Kick each other. In the ‘90s Capcom mashed its already rabidly popular Street Fighter characters with the superheroes of the Marvel Comics universe in several fighting games. That partnership hit its peak with Marvel vs. Capcom 2, a game that is still selling for $100 or more in classic game auctions. It was light on story but high in fun factor, as Capcom proved that deep down gamers didn’t really care why Hulk was fighting Zangief, or why it was even a close fight. Gamers just wanted to have those crazy fights.

It’s a great promotional move for Marvel, which has stepped into the big time with its own movie studio. Iron Man and War Machine, who many kids in the ‘90s primarily knew from the game, are now movie stars in their own right. Any game pitting comic book superheroes against fighting game superstars (we’re glancing in your direction, Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter) owes the Marvel vs. Capcom series a debt. Pay up, now. You don’t want Tron Bonne and her army of Servbots to have to beat it out of you, do you?
