MapleStory murderer arrested in Japan
In Miyazaki, Japan, a 43-year-old female MapleStory user was arrested by police for killing her in-game husband’s character after the 33-year-old male user virtually divorced her. The scorned women then logged into his account, using information he had given her during better times, and completely deleted his character as retribution. Talk about a messy break-up.
The man, who lives in Sapporo, Japan, then notified police and the woman was arrested for “inappropriate computer access.” She is currently in police custody in Sapporo. The consequence for her MapleStory murder could be a hefty fine (approximately $5,000) or five years in jail.
A great additional punishment would be to allow the victim to delete his former-virtual-wife’s account. An eye for an eye. After all, it takes a substantial amount of time to build up a character in any MMORPG. Plus, the man involved could have purchased items from MapleStory‘s cash shop and lost an investment made in the character.
Honestly though, this probably isn’t the first time this has happened. I’m sure a lot of MMO players have had a character or account deleted in a malicious act by a former friend or associate. Now that a woman has been arrested in Japan for meddling with an account, this could mean other wronged parties may seek real-world justice for people who harm them virtually.
