Capcom wants to make big moves with its original properties, seeing the Resident Evil film series as a model for how successful its games can become in Hollywood. In a interview for investors now posted at GameDaily, Capcom Head of Character Content Business, Toshihiro Tokumaru, mentioned that the budget for the Lost Planet movie is between $150-200 million.

That puts it in the neighborhood of Warner Bros. blockbuster The Dark Knight, which cost an estimated $185 million to make. That seems like a pretty big risk to me. Knight was a must see movie for Batman’s rabid fandom and became an event movie that everybody had to see. Lost Planet Just doesn’t strike me as a movie anyone was clamoring for.

Tokumaru talks about Capcom wanting to have a greater stake in its growing film enterprise. In addition to the Resident Evil films already released and Lost Planet in the works, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li kicks its way into theaters February 27, 2009. Lost Planet’s rights have been licensed to another party, but Tokumaru said Capcom is looking to do movies in which the game company would retain potentially lucrative film rights.

Capcom isn’t alone in wanting to transition games into movies. Electronic Arts has signed with United Talent Agency to help ease the transition of turning games into films. Inexplicably, the first EA game up for film transition is reported to be The Sims.
