Lloyd-Webber prepping Phantom of the Opera game, seriously

by Brian Allen on Jan 18, 2009 at 10:07 AM

Phantom of the OperaHere’s one I did not see coming. The Los Angeles Times has reported that Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Really Useful Group is working on a Broadway musical game. The company that handles Lloyd-Webber’s interests is talking to several game publishers including EA, who publishes the mega-hit Rock Band series of music-themed games. Reportedly Really Useful Group wants to develop the games across multiple consoles and PCs.

Apparently, this game will test the ability of players to sing along with the acclaimed composer’s songs and might include audition elements. I don’t know what to think about this. I love videogames and musicals, but I’m unsure how big that target demographic really is. But I’m not doubling over with the laughter I might have a few years ago. The Nintendo Wii has brought in millions of new gamers who just might like a game based on Broadway musicals. The music game genre is huge now too, with everybody from Metallica to the Beatles cashing in.

If such a game can work, the musicals of Webber are a logical first choice. There’s no bigger name on Broadway than Lloyd-Webber.  His hit Cats was the longest running musical in history until he broke his own record with Phantom of the Opera. The composer has proven himself a master at keeping his long-running plays in step with today’s pop culture. He has cast some of his most popular shows using reality TV and in 2008 appeared on American Idol.
