Lenovo releasing a game-worthy netbook, the IdeaPad S12

Lenovo S12

Lenovo and NVidia are currently working on a new netbook and, from the description, there will be a lot to offer in this laptop for the gaming population.

Using the NVidia Ion graphics technology, Lenovo’s IdeaPad S12 is said to have enough graphics power for full 1080i HD playback and Blu-ray support as well as having a graphics processor powerful enough to be able to offer full HD performance for many of the newer games out there. This doesn’t mean that you’ll be able to support them without a problem since some of the specs are low. Then again, for a starting price of $449 you get what you pay for in terms of power.

The other systems stats are rather low. Then again it is on par with other netbooks. The IdeaPad S12 sports a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor and only one GB of RAM. As I said, about on par with other netbooks. For hard drive size there are the options of 160GB, 250GB and 320GB. You can also get an extra battery, just in case. The full HD playback option will cost an extra $50. The 12.1 in. screen will have a resolution of 1280x800.

In terms of internet connectivity, there will be ethernet, WiFi and Bluetooth built-in and the option to get 3G connectivity as well through the ExpressCard port. There will be three USB ports, a 4-in-1 media card reader and both VGA and HDMI ports.

One of the things that might tip the scales for some gamers is the fact that the IdeaPads come with Windows XP. Some gamers tend to have problems with Vista since some games just aren’t supported on the current Windows operating system. So the turn back to XP will be opening up many options for gamers, the drawback no DirectX10 until you find and install it without Vista.

So for the size and price you’re still getting a lot of options and power for a low price. So keep your eyes open. If you’re looking for a small, cheap powerhouse, this might be your best option when available within the next month (June 2009).

Lenovo might be figuring out different configurations of the S12 that would make it more gaming friendly but for the size and price to start off it seems like a good bet. Until they find those configurations out, your best bet for power and price might be the Lenovo IdeaPad Y730
