Valve has had a bumpy history with the PS3. The company has gone on record several times saying how complicated the PS3’s architecture is and how it has no interest developing for the console. These harsh words were put to rest this year at E3 when Valve announced Portal 2 is coming to the PS3. Valve even went so far to say the PS3 version will be superior to all other platforms. It’s good to see Valve spreading it’s games across more consoles besides the PC and Xbox 360, but what about its past games?
In the September issue of PSM3, Valve’s Doug Lombardi was asked if older games such as Left 4 Dead would ever appear on the PS3. Lombardi replied, “Who knows what the future will bring?”
It’s a tease to say the least, especially when we know Valve currently has a team dedicated to PS3 development. Lombardi also took the time to comment of Valve’s involvement with other Sony led technologies such as PlayStation Move and 3D support. In short, Portal 2 will not support Move or 3D.
“[Move and 3D] will have to wait for Portal 3 or another title,” Lombardi said.
I have to admit that using Move as a portal gun sounds really fun. The glowing bulb on top of the controller can turn orange or blue depending on the portal you’re using. Portal 2 in 3D is a harder sell for me. As with just about any 3D game, I want the technology to be more than just a visual treat. If there was a way to change the gameplay based on whether you’re playing in 2D or 3D, I would be sold ten times over.
Portal 2 will be arriving in 2D in 2011 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
