Latest Xbox Live update will lock out “unauthorized” memory units

by Brian Allen on Oct 22, 2009 at 08:36 AM

Members of Xbox Live’s preview program will receive the much discussed update that will add Facebook, Twitter and Zune Marketplace this week. That way you won’t even have to leave your console to follow Gamertell on Twitter.

But those aren’t the only things included in that update. Microsoft’s “Major Nelson”

that unauthorized memory units will no longer work with the 360 after the latest update.

If you’ve got any saves on a non-Microsoft memory device, you’ll want to get those moved ASAP because this Xbox Live update, as with the others, is mandatory.

Losing 15-20 hours worth of gameplay for three or four of your favorite games is not fun. In fact, that is the total opposite of fun. In addition to the aforementioned social networking sites and Zune, streaming radio through Last.fm will be available on the Xbox 360. All Xbox Live members can sample the service for free but only Gold members will receive full access.
