Last week we were shocked and delighted to hear that Konami is working on a new game in the Rocket Knight series. Rocket Knight Adventures was a 2-D side scrolling game that came out in 1993 on the SEGA Genesis. It featured an opossum named Sparkster who wore a suit of armor, carried a sword and jet pack and fought evil looking pigs. It was one of my favorite Genesis games and now we get to see a video of the upcoming game for new systems in action.
The working title is Rocket Knight and it’s being developed by Climax Group. It’s planned to be released as a downloadable title on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC via Steam sometime in 2010. The game takes place 15 years after Sparkster’s last adventure. The story tells of Sparkster leaving the kingdom he once saved after the pigs he once fought off were allowed to live within the kingdom. One day Sparkster sees a battle taking place in which the pigs and opossums have joined forces to take on an army of villainous wolves.
The trailer shows a very colorful world and a camera that is pulled back more than previous games. Rocket Knight stays true to its side scrolling roots but updates the area of movement from 2-D to 2.5-D. Emphasis seems to placed on combat while the jet pack is activated and using Sparkster’s tail to latch on to the environment.
Check out the trailer below and relive the days of gaming mascots.
