Abrams was still silent about the actual plot, which we do know will deal with Kirk’s taking over the Enterprise from Captain Pike, and that the Romulans will
be the feature villains in the film. He did go on to say in the interview,
Like many Star Trek fans out there I had been upset at the apparent decline in the now forty-two year old franchise. This decline certainly did come from a lack of fan interest which is as strong, if not stronger, than it has ever been. Instead, it’s likely due to the lack of innovation and quality from the more recent television shows, starting with Voyager and Enterprise, to the failure of Nemesis and even the complete collapse of videogames centered around the franchise.
When I first heard that J.J. Abrams, one of the creative minds behind TV’s Lost, was directing Star Trek 11 and developing the movie around the original series and replacing the entire cast with mostly unknown actors, I had nothing but doubts and reservations about the film. That all changed when I saw the first teaser trailer for the film in theaters. It actually gave me goose bumps. I was even more thrilled to see that several people in the theaters had actually gotten out of the seats and cheered, showing that the love for the series isn’t dead after all.
Star Trek 11 is due to be released in theaters May 8, 2009.
