James Cameron to work closely with Ubisoft on movie-game project

by Christopher Buckner on May 30, 2008 at 04:49 PM

james cameronJames Cameron, the Oscar winning director of Titanic, Aliens and the Terminator is looking to break new ground in videogame-film relations with the announcement that he and Ubisoft have joined forces.

Ubisoft will be developing a video game based on Cameron’s next feature film, Avatar (no relation to the Nickelodeon cartoon Avatar).

Avatar is supposed to be a larger-than-life space epic that tells the story of a ex-Marine trapped on a alien world filled with all sorts of strange and exotic life forms. When his body is badly damaged, the marine undergoes an experiment to exist as an avatar. His mind trapped in the body of a supposedly 10-foot-tall alien and he becomes a powerful weapon of war.

While little information has been provided about the game, Ubisoft is looking to introduce a new set of innovative 3D software. This would match Cameron’s own ambitions of filming Avatar with the latest, cutting-edge 3D film technologie.

So far, it sounds like the Avatar game isn’t meant to be just another bad film-to-game adaptation, but instead equal to (or better than) an innovative film.

The Avatar feature film is scheduled for a December, 18, 2009 release. As of yet, there is no word on when the game will be released, or for which systems.
