Jack Thompson suing Facebook to remove users who hate him

by Brian Allen on Oct 6, 2009 at 10:32 AM

jack tompson with grand theft auto iv in handBeing disbarred by the state of Florida hasn’t stopped Jack Thompson from making enemies, headlines or legal trouble. His latest effort is a lawsuit against social networking mainstay Facebook, claiming the site should remove comments threatening Thompson.

Facebook has numerous groups for people galvanized by a single cause and many of them are anti-Thompson. Some include Stop Jack Thompson and Yes Jack Thompson, I Play Violent Video Games And Am Not a Psychopath.

Among the posts that angered Thompson are a user offering $50 to anyone who will punch Thompson in the face and another user suggesting people hit Thompson in the face with an Atari 2600. In court documents filed in Florida, Thompson said he faxed Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg twice but received no response. In ThompsonWorld, that’s grounds for a lawsuit and he filed one September 29, 2009. Most legal experts don’t give Thompson much of a chance since the Telecommunications Act of 1996 contains a section that says website owners are not liable for user supplied content.

Thompson counters that Facebook has already shown a willingness to delete potentially harmful content, noting the site’s administrators deleted a poll asking whether or not Barack Obama should be assassinated.
