id to expand focus as PC gamers move to consoles

Next up to cast a shadow on PC gaming’s vitality is id Software, which had been a driving force in the platform’s popularity during the ‘90s with the Doom and Quake games.
Last Thursday (March 20, 2008), id’s Director of Business, Steve Nix, told Eurogamer that the average first-person shooter player isn’t just some guy armed with a keyboard and mouse anymore. Although id will continue to steadfastly support PC gaming, it must take into account the current market shifts. Nix told Eurogamer that even formerly die-hard PC gamers are making the jump to consoles.
I know that I have friends who are considered core gamers, who years ago were just keyboard and mouse guys - now, when a game ships on all platforms, they buy the console version, even though the PC version is sitting there and they have a PC that would run it perfectly well. It’s just their preference.
Big words coming from a developer that has been one of the most active in supporting the PC. id has yet to develop a game specifically for consoles, as opposed to formerly PC-exclusive developers Epic and Bioware, which have adopted the consoles (the XBox line in particular) as the platform of choice.
With that, it may not surprise some that Nix also thinks that this market shift is limited and the PC will not be going down anytime soon.

This current trend of developers jumping ship from the PC is getting a bit worrying. I appreciate that it’s mainly as a result of profits lost to piracy on the PC but its a shame given the PC is still unbeatable for FPS’s and RTS’s. You will never beat the accuracy of the mouse and keyboard with a console controller.
