How to be a voice actor for games

by Danielle Riendeau on Feb 27, 2008 at 04:36 PM

Lt. Vasquez, COD 4
Gamasutra and sister site GameCareerGuide have just run a fascinating feature on breaking into voice acting for games, as part of their “Ask the experts” column. In it, voice actor David Sobolov (Unreal Tournament III, Call of Duty 4) shares a few tips and some insider knowledge about breaking in to a very competitive field.

Basically, Sobolov advises that wannabe voice actors get trained and produce professional demos (including a character demo), then go out and try to get an agent. Being willing to do nearly any kind of voice work helps, as is an ability to do many characters in a very limited time.

As for how the actual job works, be prepared to work fast with very little preparation. Solobov mentions that most jobs are hired by the day (though gaming gigs may go on a bit longer) and the actor doesn’t even get the script until they walk through the door.

It’s a very cool read and a glimpse into a world that most gamers take for granted. Anyone interested in game development should check it out.
