We all know what a giant rip-off the Xbox 360’s Wi-Fi adapter is at $90. When damn near every other modern system (PS3, Wii, PSP… even the DS!) has built in Wi-Fi, you have every right to be a little pissed off/confused about the 360’s utter lack of wireless. The good people at Gizmodo have put together a handy guide to getting that Xbox up and running on the wireless intertubes without the overpriced MS accessory.
While the post lists several handy setups (all of which seem fairly easy to coordinate) but my favorite has to be the most obvious - sharing your laptop connection. All you have to do is bring over your laptop, hook your 360 into your comp via an ethernet cable, do a little “internet jui-jitsu” and viola - Xbox Live is at your fingertips. One word of warning, however - Mac and Linux folks will have an easier time with this solution. Still - it’s free and almost hassle-proof. I love it.
Another genius fix - using the Xbox (original Xbox, that is) wireless adapter. From the post: “Turns out, a regular Xbox wireless adapter (which is a supercheap $50), works just fine, with a tiny bit of finagling: Don’t put in its actual install CD. Just plug it in, and set your encryption. It might take two tries to get it to work, but it will. And, it won’t eat up a USB port like the official Xbox 360 one.”
Definitely give this one a read if you’re short on cash and haven’t fallen down the $90 rabbit hole MS wants you to.
