Mount&Blade may not be the most eye-catching title of all time but, hey, what’s in a name anyway? The important thing is the gameplay which you can experience by signing up for the final beta at Gamespot.
The M&B beta will be going on for the next two weeks and will end on August 25, 2008. The final game will be available for PC via retail on September 16, 2008, in North America and September 19, 2008, in Europe.
Mount&Blade is an first/third-person action RPG that takes place during the medieval age. When the game starts you’ll be prompted to create a character to explore the land of Calradia. There’s no need to worry if the physical characteristics of your character start to get on your nerves because the face and hair can be changed at any time. After the creation stage, you align your character with a faction to excel attributes including as mercantilism, archery, armor, and cavalry strength. The game tends to rely on working as a unit instead of the traditional one man army role.
Combat is affected by the type of terrain you happen to be on once the conflict starts. Adverse weather conditions such as rain, fog, and snow and help or hurt you in the long run. Like most strategy games each unit has strengths and weaknesses to discover. The key to victory is using your cavalry troops to gain an edge in battle. For each battle won you are given the option of taking enemy soldiers who haven’t been killed and convert them to your side or sell them into slavery.
Mount&Blade also supports an active modding community. There are already some mods that drastically change the environments and character models long after the initial story is complete.
