Hands on with the ezShot Gun attachment for Wii

by Mark Rollins on Aug 5, 2008 at 10:15 PM

exShot for the WiiI find that lightweight gun frames for the Nintendo Wii like the 2-in-1 Combined Light Gun from Brando usually have two problems. The first is that the companies that make gun frames assume first-person shooters (FPSs) do not use the Nunchuk and put all the design controls in the gun frame to hold the trigger. The second is that they also assume the WiiMote’s top A button doesn’t get used much and put it on top so you have to use the other hand to access it. Unfortunately, the ezShot Gun by ezGear takes these design flaws a bit further.

At first, it looks like the ezShot addresses the first problem as it is designed to separate the Nunchuk and the WiiMote. This unfortunately positions the Nunchuk’s C button as the primary trigger, a button that usually doesn’t get used as anything but manipulating the camera. Most gun frames for the Wii use the B trigger button as the obvious choice since pushing the trigger feels more like a real gun.

I’m guessing the ezShot will work well with games where the C button is the button to shoot but I haven’t played a game like that. Then again, I don’t play many FPSs but the few I have played - Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - don’t use the C button that much.

The other mistake is that gun frames make it difficult to use the WiiMote’s top A button. There is simply not a convenient way for a user can use the trigger and A at the same time.  However, A is one of the most-often used buttons on the WiiMote, even for FPSes.  Once again, the ezShot fails to improve on this as well.

The ezShot is also the only Wii gun frame that I’ve seen that requires batteries. This is very odd since most gun frames are simply plastic frames. The two AAA batteries allow the user the ability to activate a tiny, laser-like red light so you can pretend you have Arnold’s weapon from the first Terminator movie. That’s good if you want to pretend to be Ahnold, but if you really want to game, this doesn’t help because the game should give you a targeting function on its own.

I don’t recommend the ezShot but, then again, I’m not certain if I would recommend any style of gun frame. They simply put buttons in inconvenient places, making it more difficult than it’s worth. If you think the ezShot is something that you might like, order it online for about $24.99 on the link below.
