Halo 3 overshadowed by Call of Duty 4

Halo 3 may have taken the cake for best-selling game of 2007, but the FPS fans are speaking their minds; Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (CoD4) has overtaken Bungie’s third Halo installment as the most-played title on Xbox Live. Major Nelson indicates that for the week of January 14, 2008, CoD4 has trumped Halo 3 for unique online users on the Xbox 360. While CoD4 and Halo 3 take the top two spots, Guitar Hero III nips at their heels, which is rather surprising considering Rock Band‘s infinitely more replayable multiplayer modes. Shredders must really love (or hate) “Through the Fire and the Flames.“
It’s amazing to see the scope of CoD4‘s fanbase. Considering that Halo 3 is an Xbox 360 exclusive and CoD4 is a multi-platform release, it was still able to overtake Halo 3 on its “home turf.” Fortunately, the games are fundamentally different. Halo 3 remains a classic death match-style shooter with a thriving community and endless replay value due to its various multi-player customization options and innovative theater mode, while CoD4 offers a bevy of well-designed maps, hit scan-style action and an addictive perks and challenges system that encourages inexperienced players to keep playing and more experienced players to restrict themselves to certain, more unorthodox weaponry. It’s easy to enjoy both without feeling like you’re playing the same as you switch off between the two, since both games bring entirely different things to the table. Bungie and Infinity Ward have given us options, and that’s what should matter in the end to us gamers, anyway.
