Gun enthusiast website GunsLot has a nice, no-nonsense list of the top 25 games of all time based purely on sales numbers. Only sales independent of package deals were counted.
Unsurprisingly, Pokemon, Mario, Sims, and GTA titles dominate the list. There was a heavy focus on Nintendo titles both old and new, with 17 of the 25 being products of the big N (including 4 in the top 5). The GTA series had a nice foothold, with 3 top titles, as did the Gran Turismo games, which also boasted 3. The PC fared quite nicely as well, with the first two Sims games, Starcraft, and World of Warcraft.
The only major publisher that wasn’t well represented is MS – only Halo 2 made the list. Surely next week’s release of Halo 3 is poised to fix that.
It’s nothing terribly new: Pokemon games are a license to print money, console people like their Mario and GTA’s, and PCer’s love their Sims and Blizzard games. Still, it’s fun to discuss (read: argue) about the numbers.
