Guitar Hero: World Tour not making news makes news

by Jenni Lada on Nov 17, 2008 at 02:45 PM

Guitar Hero World Tour
It turns out that Guitar Hero: World Tour isn’t shaping up to be a sensational seller, like the other entries in the series. The New York Times is reporting that World Tour sold roughly 534,000 copies in the week after it was released, while Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock managed to sell around 1.4 million copies in the week after it launched. So, based on those early figures, one could reason that World Tour is only a third as successful as Legends of Rock. Perhaps this means that Rock Band is having an incredibly visible impact on Guitar Hero‘s sales. Or, it could be an indication that people are cutting back on extravagant video game purchases.

Guitar Hero: World Tour, which is the fourth entry in the series and the first to incorporate instruments other than guitars into the game, was launched on October 26, 2008 for the PS2, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360. The game alone can cost between $49.99-$59.99, depending on the system. The game with a guitar costs between $89.99-$99.99. If you decide you want everything, all the instruments and the game, it costs between $179.99-$189.99.

So readers, did you pick up Guitar Hero: World Tour when it launched? If not, why not? Did the move to include drums and vocals, and be more like Rock Band, turn you off? Or did the 86 song tracklist not have enough music from artists you enjoy? Could you be waiting for Black Friday sales on the bundle? Personally, I think the Guitar Hero series should just stick to guitars - that’s why I didn’t go for Guitar Hero: World Tour.

I know why its not selling and it has nothing to do with the quality of the game.  There are two main reasons Guitar Hero World Tour is not selling at the same pace as the previous versions.  First, the economy is in the gutter right now.  Nobody can afford anything.  Second, the market is saturated with Guitar Hero products.  Slow down guys!

I don’t understand why you guys think Guitar Hero should stick to guitars. They made it possible with this game to actually put your OWN music into the game. I don’t see how anyone could no love that fact. This game should be a huge hit.
