Google’s Lively ain’t lookin’ so lively now

When Google unveiled Lively to the masses, they made clear that the reason for its launch was to allow players to meet new people and experience new means for online expression.
That project sounded eerily similar to that other online space, Second Life, and if one were to observe the two side by side, the resemblances between the two would be near uncanny.
However, unlike Second Life, a project whose continued existence continues to affirm that people enjoy escaping reality, Google’s Lively project is now considered dead, to be effective December 2008 according to Google’s blog.
In reading their blog, Google’s rationale for canceling the project was a decision to focus more on “core projects” including ads and app businesses. Of course, it could never be due to the fact that individuals are simply not ready for another Second Life.
Of course, the fact that Google shut its Lively project down should give pause to Sony. As they do everything in their power in order to prepare for the launch of Home for the Playstation 3, they would be wise to see what worked in Lively, as well as what would end up failing. If not, I sincerely doubt that Home will be a place that current and potential Playstation 3 owners would ever consider visiting.

The Livelyzens (Lively users) are coming together to appeal to Google to keep Lively alive.
on November 25, 2008 at 04:45 PM - LINKLively is a great platform for interaction as well as creativity. It is easy to use, browser based, embeddable on webpages to bring a 3D experience right on your website. While Lively has been in beta and has limited capability in terms of the objects and avatars available, the Livelyzens have been able to come up with very creative ways to create art from what is available. All this in a “clean” 3D world thanks to Google’s vigilance in getting rid of rooms with inappropriate content. More than anything, Lively has become a place to make friends for life – from all over the world with wonderful people.
Please visit our website http://livelyzens.com and participate in the Lively Machinima contest we are conducting to show the creative potential of Google Lively. Please also sign our online petition http://livelyzens.com/petition.aspx
We request netizens to support us in reviving a wonderful 3D world that is a kid friendly and a creative space for art and interaction amongst adults.
