Google unveils Android-enabled phone but where are all the games!?

gamertell google t-mobile android phoneGoogle and T-Mobile let the world oogle its newest creation today (September 23, 2008), the T-Mobile G1, the first Android-enabled phone with (according to the press release) “full touch-screen functionality and a QWERTY keyboard with a mobile Web experience that includes the popular Google products.” It’s obviously meant to compete with the iPhone but, then again, what new cell phone isn’t?

Also according to T-Mobile’s press release, the Andorid phone will offer gaming capabilities but specifics - game buttons, game titles, developers, etc. - have not yet been officially announced.

PCMag does point out that there are currently 8 games that can run on Android currently available in the Android Market (as well as 23 other apps):

  • Android Says, by Charles Chen
  • Bonsai Blast, by Glu Mobile
  • MisMisMatch, by Ben Leiws
  • PAC-MAN, by Namco
  • Anagrams v0.2, by Dan Rice
  • Balls 2 the Wall!, by Kari Rosaen
  • Slide Puzzle, by Joel Schnall
  • Metamath Solitaire v0.1, by Adam Bliss

Also good omens for gamers is that we’ve already seen some news about games that will run on Android including Wi-Fi Army, Space Bugs, Parallel Kingdom, Monolith Android and EDU Blaster. Game developer OmniGSoft is also planning on creating a few Android-capable games.

Applications, including games, will be available through Android Market, a service that sounds very similar to the N-Gage (current market and interface, not ye olde phones) and the Apple App Store.

Here’s the snippet that concerns gaming from Google’s press release:

The T-Mobile G1 is the first phone to offer access to Android Market, which hosts unique applications and mash ups of existing and new services from developers around the world. With just a couple of short clicks, customers can find and download a wide range of innovative software applications - from games to social networking and on-the-go shopping - to personalize their phone and enhance their mobile lifestyle. When the phone launches next month, dozens of unique, first-of-a-kind Android applications will be available for download on Android Market, including:

It’s a good bet that most current casual mobile phone games and Java-based games will be able to run on Android. If not, then it’s just another fancy schmancy pricey pocket-to-ear bling with a touch screen.

I’m sure there will be plenty of games coming out as soon as developers are able to charge for them on the market. ;-)
