Only in America, fight fans. Only in America.
VideoGamer tells us 2K Sports will bring Don King Boxing to Nintendo’s Wii and DS systems March 27, 2009. 2K says the game will make heavy usage of the Wii balance board to mimic the real life motions of boxing. It isn’t necessary to play that way, however, as the game can be played without the balance board.
The company also says that the use of the balance board will give gamers a workout. As far as game play, 20 licensed boxers will battle in real life locales including the Trump Taj Mahal and Madison Square Garden. 2K actually announced this game back in 2007 so there was a delay for some reason. Boxing fans hope this turns out better than Don King’s Prizefighter on the 360. Reviews for that one were pretty underwhelming. EA’s Facebreaker tried a more arcade-y take on the sweet science but didn’t fare any better with reviewers, quickly punching its way into the bargain bin.
There’s definitely room for a well-done boxing game as the last truly outstanding effort, Fight Night Round 3, was released in 2006. Maybe a fresh start and some snazzy motion controls are what Don King’s latest effort needed. Well, that and a fight promoter mode that allows you to think of creative ways to steal money from your fighter.
