GC 2007 Best in Show winners announced

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games

With the fall of the once mighty E3, it’s been up to the various other conventions to pick up the slack, and GC Leipzig has done just that, with this year’s attendance more than 185,000 people. Today saw the announcement of the best in show awards, named by the show’s organizers as the cream of the crop amid a sea of stiff competition.

And the winners are:

  • Best PC Game: Crysis
  • Best Xbox 360 Game: BioShock
  • Best PSP Game: God of War: Chains of Olympus
  • Best PlayStation 2 Game: Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
  • Best PlayStation 3 Game: Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
  • Best Wii Game: Mario & Sonic At the Olympic Games
  • Best Nintendo DS Game: Flash Focus: Vision Training in Minutes a Day (Eye Training, in Europe)
  • Best Online Game: Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures
  • Best Hardware Acessory: Wii Balance Board

Crysis and Bioshock are no surprise, nor is the PSP God of War. Given the Euro love of futball, Pro Evolution Soccer makes sense too, but Mario and Sonic as the best Wii game? Really!?

Apparently, the cartoony Olympic title won out over Super Mario Galaxy due to a morbid curiosity about mascot supremacy. According to the jury:

“We finally discover who can run faster and jump higher. The game unites the former archrivals from Sega and Nintendo, renewing the old feud in the form of a sporting contest. Mario and Sonic manage to translate Olympic disciplines into easily mastered, entertaining games fun.“
