Gamook trying to get its games on a few celebrity fan sites
Besides writing game reviews and news, I’ve also dabbled in quite a bit of web design (what nerd/geek hasn’t). Several years ago, I created a celebrity web site thinking I could eventually sell it as the official fan club site. Well, it’s been about 10 years since I made the site and, still, no income from it. Every once in a while, however, I get a “business opportunity” that promises I’ll make some money with my site using their product.
The most recent is from Gamook (main site may not yet be accessible), a casual game site/service that is launching this month (February 2008). According to the the affiliate page, the company creates (or purchases) Flash based games that webmasters paste into their fan sites. There also appears to be some type of game color customization tool, so you can skin it pink for your super girly site or black because that is just the way you roll.
Here’s the initial, business-y email I received from Gamook (names have been X-ed to protect the contact’s identity and me from semi-embarrassment):
Dear xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.xxx,
I am Xxxxxx Xxxxxx from Gamook.com. I would like to speak to someone about a new business opportunity for your site based on your site’s content. We are currently in the pre-launch stage and are reaching out to sites that we think could benefit by putting some contextually relevant Celebrity Games on their website. This would allow you to increase website traffic, generate additional revenue and provide something new for your Celebrity Fans.
Please contact me at so we can arrange for a time to discuss this new and exciting opportunity further. Please also check out http://GamookAffiliates.com/ for more details and to take a look at some screen shots of how these games would look on your site.
Looking forward to hearing back from you,
Xxxxxx Xxxxxx

For most webmasters, this is pretty much a risk-free no-brainer. Pasting some code on a games page only takes a minute (assuming the code is clean) and the idea of generating any type of income from it is always nice on the ol’ wallet.
The nice part is that Gamook promises webmasters who use the games will get 30% of the revenue generated from in-game advertising. Of course, there isn’t a clear way to monitor that on the webmaster side (as far as I can tell - I’m still waiting to hear back from Gamook).
The main problem I can see is that no one is really going to fan sites to play generic casual games. Also, if it is going to be related to that celebrity, it needs to be a bit more unique than a simple color change and using celebrity images is an issue due to copyrights.
OK, since it’s Valentine’s Day and the celebrity is sorta tied to the day by way of her name, I’ll tell you who it is: Melissa Joan Hart. Stop laughing.

I dabbled in celebrity sites a few years back as well. In fact I had a Britney Spears site about five years ago that I abandoned. Never would have imagined that she would still be so relevent all these years later. Kinda regret dropping the site now :)
