That could be one of the reasons for the company’s instructional video (see below) that attempts to enlighten employees on the fine art of marketing video games towards the ladies. It is a fairly interesting nearly nine-minute video titled “Understanding our Expanded Audience” that was part of the company’s “Sharpen the mind, shape the body” promotion. During this advertising campaign, anyone who purchased Wii Fit or My Fitness Coach would receive a free subscription to Cosmo or Good Housekeeping magazine.
This offer has since expired, though one can’t fault the creativity of this offer, as it does help in bringing in potential non-gamers to the fold. It has also drawn chuckles from most video game blogging outlets, with
Kotaku and Joystiq both commenting on the hilarity of the video, while simultaneously chastising GameStop for subjugating its staff to something that is nonsensical at best and patronizing at the worst.
Having met girls who enjoy video games throughout my life, they are not really that difficult to understand and they certainly deserve more than what GameStop is showing here. After seeing this, it is easy to understand why girl gamers often feel marginalized by the rest of the gaming population.
Without further ado, the video can be seen below. Take note that the woman speaks with a very British accent, which may be the short’s only saving grace for the nine minutes that the video takes of your life.
