Games for Windows magazine goes online-only

by Danielle Riendeau on Apr 9, 2008 at 11:26 AM

Games for Windows
The 1UP group just announced that their flagship PC gaming magazine Games for Windows: The Official Magazine is moving entirely to the online world. In an announcement on 1UP posted yesterday, site director Sam Kennedy stated that the magazine will “be transitioning from a print publication to an online-exclusive destination here on 1UP.com. The move is being done to help focus our efforts to where PC gamers spend most of their time: on their PCs.“

The announcement was quick to point out that the entire editorial staff will be retained, and will continue to work for the site, but GFW editor-in-chief Jeff Green had some wistful words about the closing of the magazine in his related blog post.

“So, yeah. This is tough. This sucks. I’m not going to pretend to be in a good mood. But the editors are still here. You’re not rid of us yet. One era has ended. Another one is beginning. We don’t have to be happy about what went down here.“

The news comes after a long list of editorial changes over at 1UP and Electronic Gaming Monthly, and not long enough after the demise of the beloved Official PlayStation Magazine (also from the Ziff Davis group). This also means that the once-mighty game magazine empire is down to just EGM, and I can’t help but think the clock is ticking. Everyone expects the print magazine to go the way of the dodo eventually (especially in such a tech-savvy industry), but it’s always sad to see a great publication go.
