With so many hidden object games available on the market, companies have to make sure that there is something special about their title, a hook that will lure in casual gamers. The Mystery of the Mary Celeste, Merscom and MediaArt’s latest entry, does just that. It takes a real mysterious and unsolved incident from the 1870’s and combines it with the supernatural. So those who play the game aren’t only enjoying searches for hidden objects and some brain teasers, they’re also enjoying an engaging story.

The Mystery of the Mary Celeste

The crew of the original Mary Celeste vanished without a trace. What will happen to the crew of the Mary Celeste II?

The original Mary Celeste was discovered in 1872, completely abandoned. Over a century later, a new ship bearing the name Mary Celeste II has been crafted and is on its maiden voyage. As a bit of good luck and to make things interesting, Mary Morehouse, who’s descended from one of the people who discovered the abandoned Mary Celeste, has been invited on said voyage.

Things don’t go smoothly. Mary, who can’t swim and isn’t all that comfortable with boat travel, starts hearing strange noises and experiencing strange phenomena. The next thing she knows, her and the captain are alone on the Mary Celeste II, and she keeps experiencing what appear to be flashbacks to the original Mary Celeste before it was abandoned.

The Mystery of the Mary Celeste

A relaxing hidden object game with an otherworldly premise.

The Mystery of the Mary Celeste is a very interesting hidden object game for a number of reasons. First, the story is very engaging. It adds visual novel elements into this hidden object game, giving you even more motivation to keep playing and discover what exactly is happening to Mary Morehouse and the Mary Celeste II.

Second, you aren’t searching for random objects. Most of the objects you’re hunting for are ones which would actually be present on a ship. Plus, you’re looking for objects that actually pertain to the story at hand. Clues to discover what’s going on, items to repair broken object, means to progress through blocked areas of the ship and the like. You even get to search backpacks, chests and drawers to find additional errant items. It adds an additional sense of realism to The Mystery of the Mary Celeste that most hidden object games don’t possess. Then, after finding all the objects in a location, you’ll be prompted to put the specific key items into action, clicking the items that needs to be effected and then clicking the key items.

Its also one of the more leisurely hidden object games, which I really enjoyed. Personally, I prefer puzzle and hidden object games where you aren’t racing against a clock to try and progress. There are no timers in The Mystery of the Mary Celeste, and I only had to use the hint option four times throughout the whole game when I had trouble trying to pick out a few very well hidden objects. It makes it easier to enjoy the whole game and story.

The Mystery of the Mary Celeste

An interesting hidden object puzzle that feels more realistic due to the practical application of found items and story.

I genuinely enjoyed The Mystery of the Mary Celeste, and already plan on recommending it to a few of my casual game playing friends. It’s got a great story, clear visuals, is fun to play, doesn’t impose any kind of pressure or stress on the player and seems fairly realistic. It’s a great hidden object game for fans of the genre or people who have been curious about trying one, but don’t want to just sit solving pointless, endless puzzles.
