ArenaNet founder working on zombie MMORPG for consoles

by Brian Allen on Nov 25, 2009 at 11:12 AM

Undead Labs logoIndustry veteran Jeff Strain - who worked at Blizzard, founded ArenaNet and served as NCSoft’s president of product development - has created a new studio called Undead Labs.

Strain didn’t come up with that as a matter of coincidence, because his goal is nothing less than the perfect zombie-based MMORPG for home consoles. It’s part of Undead’s mission statement:

Our singular focus is to create the definitive massively multiplayer zombie game (MMOZ) for console gamers. Nothing screams funny quite like wading into a group of rotting zombies with a lawn chair and a box of sharpened #2 pencils, and nothing says fun quite like doing it with your friends, whether online or on your couch.

Strain certainly has the pedigree to pull this off. In an interview with Develop, Strain talks about the untapped potential of MMOs on consoles. Asked about the potential use of motion control in this upcoming title, Strain said the Nintendo Wii doesn’t have the hardware to support it.

With Strain behind it, there’s every reason to expect this ambitious project has a shot at success. There are a ridiculous amount of zombie games out there, as well as zombies added to games such asCall of Duty: World At War. But there is always room for another good one.
