Free Xbox Live for certain games for a limited time

by Jenni Lada on Jul 30, 2008 at 11:16 AM

Shadowrun Xbox 360 box artThere are some free, online multiplayer Xbox 360 games and pigs aren’t flying. What’s going on? A special Microsoft promotion involving multiplayer Xbox 360/Games for Windows titles is what’s going on. In order to promote the joys of online multiplayer, Microsoft is allowing Silver level Xbox Live online play for Lost Planet: Colonies Edition, Shadowrun and Universe at War.

So for a limited time, Xbox 360 owners will be able to actually play some online multiplayer games without purchasing a Gold subscription. Microsoft hasn’t announced when this promotion will end, but has clearly stated that it is a limited time deal and will not be permanent.

Charging people to use multiplayer or online aspects of games is just ridiculous. This action by Microsoft may seem nice, but its really just a tease. A bait and switch to lure people into playing and seeing how much fun multiplayer can be, then yanking it away. Nintendo doesn’t charge for its online multiplayer, and neither does Sony. Microsoft needs to step up and allow all multiplayer online gaming to be free as well.

You have to look at how reliable that XBL is, though. It should be obvious that it’s maintained with the money it pulls in. Paying 7.99 US dollars per month to use an online server for nearly all online games for the Xbox 360 is really not all that bad for a top quality multiplayer experience.

But LiKuidLinsang, Nintendo and Sony are able to allow online multiplayer without charging for the service.

If the Xbox Live subscribers are happy to pay for that service and don’t mind it, that’s good for them. I just personally could never see paying for the privilege of enjoying online aspects of games after enjoying PS2 online multiplayer and DS online functions.
