Sony saw how online games geared towards kids and free-to-play MMOs were succeeding, and decided to jump into the fray with its own contribution, Free Realms. Now, Sony and Topps have just released the Free Realms Trading Card Game real world complement to the virtual world.

The Free Realms Trading Card Game has over 180 cards, 50 virtual reward cards and 16 cards that unlock the virtual version of that card online. An interesting touch is that players who invest in the trading cards also get tons of freebies to redeem in the virtual world.

For example, look at the $9.99 Free Realms Starter Pack of cards. It comes with 40 cards and the playmat, so you can start playing the card game immediately. But there’s more then that. When the owner of the starter pack decides to go online, he can type on codes for a Black Labrador dog pet, a card player T-shirt, a Cardie Racer and a one month Free Realms membership. So you’re not only getting a great start in the card game, you’re getting a solid start in the MMORPG as well.

The $3.99 Free Realms booster packs are quite nice as well. Each one comes with 10 trading cards, a virtual reward card and 50 Station Cash to spend in the online Free Realms shop on virtual items. Based on the press release information, it’s sounding like the only way to get the virtual reward cards, which unlock extra pets, clothing or items, is through these booster packs.

If you’re searching for the Free Realms cards, you may run into a bit of trouble. I checked Walmart, Target and Toys ‘R Us’ websites, and none of them had any product listings for Free Realms items. Not even for the Free Realms Station Cash cards to purchase in-game items, which are also supposed to be available. A quick search on Amazon showed ToyWiz selling the cards through the site at inflated prices, the starter pack ($9.99) is priced at $12.99 and the booster pack ($3.99) is $7.77 (May 4, 2009, 12:24pm CST).

If you’ve got to get the Free Realms trading cards, it may be better to wait a week or two. Since the items are brand new, they’re a bit of a hot commodity and online retailers may try to do some price gouging. Relax and enjoy what the game has to offer so far.

@ unknown: I don’t know if it works with Macs, since I’ve been playing it on a PC. I’m guessing that it, like pretty much all free to play online MMOs, will be Windows only.
