Fox News vs EA: The mass confusion over Mass Effect

Earlier this week (January 21, 2008), Fox News’ “Live Desk With Martha MacCallum” segment focused on the sexual content in the Xbox 360 game, Mass Effect. In the segment, titled “SE’XBOX,” it pointed out that portions of the game includes some nudity (though that is debatable) and claimed the game has been marketed toward kids (even with the “Mature” ESRB rating).
According to Kotaku, Jeff Brown, EA’s VP of corporate communications, contacted Fox News, describing the report’s claim that the game was marketed toward children as “flat-out false” and asked Fox News to issue a correction.
Here’s the video of the segment:
MTV received the following response from Fox:
“Fox News Channel has extended several invitations to EA through a company representative to appear on ‘Live Desk With Martha MacCallum’ to discuss ‘Mass Effect’ and the segment which aired on Monday. We have received no response.”
In response, EA has refused to go on Fox. Brown told GameDaily:
“Not much to say other than there’s no interest here in another debate with an ‘expert’ that will say anything to sell a book. They need to step up and correct the record.”
For those who have not played the game, in order to get to any suggestive segments in the game, you must select the right character and then progress through the game in a fairly precise way. Chances of getting to the so-called naughty scenes are pretty difficult and, even then, there’s no full-on nudity, just a sexy side shot that would be shown in many nighttime cable shows (Nip Tuck comes to mind).
Here’s a couple clips from the game for you to decide for yourself.

There is a whole world of pornographic film out there and it’s a wonder how parents don’t see their kids (mostly male) watching or looking at this stuff. I think this whole idea about how video games, pornography and R rated movies corrupting the mind of a child is just a huge conspiracy. Parents nowadays are just too controlling. In my opinion if kids are introduced to this stuff and have a choice whether or not to view it at a young age can desensitize them (in a good way). Kids and teens can learn the morals of life, be A students, and treat eachother with respect alongside playing these videogames. I’m 17 years old and have been playing these gritty action games since I was a toddler. In my whole family’s opinion, I’m a very situated and intelligent person, even though I’ve been playing these gritty games, watching R rated and even the occasional NC17 movies since I was a child. Don’t create such a hype for something that is just a game.
