Five better names than “Pokemon Platinum”

by Jenni Lada on May 14, 2008 at 09:36 AM

The issue of Coro Coro magazine which announced Pokemon PlatinumIn case you haven’t heard the rumor/revelation, the new version of Pokemon Diamond/Pearl will be called Pokemon Platinum. Scans from Coro Coro Comic magazine confirm the new DS Pokemon title, which may be out in September 2008 in Japan. Aside from the quiet rage owners of Diamond and Pearl are now feeling, since they may now be missing out on a Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection-enabled Underground, Battle Island and new Shaymin, Giratina and Regigigas forms, there is also a bit of confusion concerning the name.

After all, Platinum doesn’t really fit in with the Diamond and Pearl theme: Platinum is a white-gray metal and diamonds and pearls are precious gems. It’s like one of those games you played in school where you had to pick out the thing that didn’t belong. Sure, all three substances can be valuable but still, it just doesn’t feel like Pokemon Platinum fits among Pokemon Diamond/Pearl. At least Pokemon Yellow made sense, since the games it accompanied also had color titles - Red and Blue. There are plenty of more appropriate names for Pokemon Platinum, so let’s look at a few options.

Pokemon Zirconia
Admittedly, cubic zirconia isn’t a natural precious gem, but it is still a gem. Plus it would be representative of Nintendo’s cheap attempt to make more money by announcing a better version of Diamond and Pearl within a year of releasing the games in North America and two years after releasing them in Japan.

Just think how perfect Pokemon Quartz could be. Quartz is also a semi-precious gem, much like pearls, and yet can also have a diamond-like appearance. Plus the color would fit in perfectly. Diamonds are transparent, quartz are opaque and pearls are solids.

Pokemon Hematite
Maybe Nintendo wanted to mix things up by tossing a metallic name like Platinum in with Diamond or Pearl. Hematite is the silverish black mineral form of iron oxide and is considered a gem, so Pokemon Hematite would have been a smashing new Pokemon game.

Pokemon Topaz/Amethyst/Tourmaline/Moonstone
All About Pokemon Figure reported April 15, 2008, that Nintendo had trademarked five possible Pokemon titles, and the four options above were among them. Frankly, any one of them would have fit better with Pokemon Diamond/Pearl than Pokemon Platinum. After all, topaz, amethyst, tourmaline and moonstone are all precious or semi-precious gems. Moonstone in particular could have been an interesting choice, as there are moonstones in the Pokemon games.

LOL, ouch :). Very true, though. Also, after using “Diamond” and “Platinum” they can’t get much nicer, so you have to wonder where they’ll go from here.

I know, right? They’re running out of precious commodities. I was almost going to say they should have gone with Pokemon Black Pearl and hired Liz Taylor to market it. :P

I wouldn’t be surprised to see them possibly go with car names. Like the next batch could be Pokemon Civic, Pokemon Solstice and Pokemon Escalade.

... I would SO play Pokemon Solstice.

Pokemon could also mention pokemon onix. Onix is ablack see-trew gem

  • Jenni Lada from Chicago said:

I kind of do actually. See, onyx is one of quartz’s forms.

  • BrAnderson said:

But the only problem is that Onyx is already a Pokemon, and I dont think they want to name the game after a fairly common Pokemon.

  • Jenni Lada from Chicago said:

That’s exactly what I was thinking BrAnderson. :D That’s why I went with Quartz instead.

No, No, No Nintendo didn’t want to mix things up.
Nintendo Never, Ever Hack at all.

I actually guessed the Platinum title at a co-worker two weeks before I heard that it would be the title. Mostly, I was thinking along the lines of a wedding ring. Diamonds and Pearls are pretty, but the Platinum is the setting they fit into and can be shown off in.

I’m just wishing I’d bet on my hunch. ;D The guys all thought I was crazy and I could have made hand over fist.

  • Jenni Lada from Chicago said:

@Lovecraft - That is good reasoning for it! I never even thought of that. You should have bet on it. XD

Also. Crystal doesn’t really work with Gold and Silver
