Because it’s not like there was already an entire Internet full of people a little peeved at the porting of Final Fantasy XIII to the Xbox 360, Square Enix accidentally, released doctored screenshots comparing the PS3 and 360 versions of the game.
As Kotaku sagely mentions, you’d think that the situation would have been handled a little more carefully. Final Fantasy fanboys are perhaps the most fanatic of all gaming fanboys. To release altered screenshots was almost like sacrilege to these poor people.
Luckily, Square Enix has quickly remedied the situation by providing screenshots directly from the Xbox 360 this time. At this point however, the whole thing’s been tarnished. If the company was looking to avoid any negative comparisons to the 360 version, it started off on the wrong foot and have only fed the fire with screenshots full of obvious differences. The little mishap with the screen comparison before only makes this stand out that much more.
I’ll eat my hat if it turns out that there are no significant visual differences in the two versions. In fact, I’m so positive, I’ll eat two hats. Of course, this is coming from the company that previously insisted that nothing would be cut to accommodate the 360’s disc capacity limit. Even with three discs, gamers lost any chance at a Japanese voiceover option. In short, the whole thing stinks.
