EU creates €1.5 million games development fund

by Pulkit Chandna on Sep 14, 2007 at 08:28 AM

European UnionThe European Union (EU) has come to the aid of European game developers by announcing a new fund of €1.5 million to aid games development in Europe. Any game developer can now apply for grants under this fund, if that developer has successfully developed one game product since January 1, 2005.

In addition, this fund would be available to developers for game development projects across the PC, console and handheld game platforms. New game developers can receive grants worth a handy €100,000, but for projects that are under development the grants range from a minimum of a €10,000 to a maximum of €60,000.

EU has made sure that European interests are well served by reserving 60% of grants for game projects that trumpet the “cultural heritage and diversity of Europe.”

European Games Developer Federation’s Malte Behrmann believes that the fund is, visibly, the result of their “political work with the European Commission.”

This bodes well for the European game developers, and the newer developers finally have a financial lifeline. Maybe, even other governments, especially in Asia, where there is maximum potential of growth in the gaming industry, will take Europe’s lead and come to the aid of some of the fledgling developers that have some bright concepts but lack the moolah.
