Etrian Odyssey II parties with potential

by Jenni Lada on Jun 24, 2008 at 04:46 PM

a screen shot from Etrian Odyssey IIEtrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard gives fans of the original Etrian Odyssey exactly what they want - more. More mapping tools, more character classes, more enemies, more quests, more equipment - you get the idea.

In doing so, some things were also altered. Classes from Etrian Odyssey may not have the same skills or abilities in Etrian Odyssey II, forcing players to rethink parties that may have worked in the previous entry. So after a bit of research and experimentation, Gamertell came up with five potential parties that might be great for exploring the dungeon.

Beginners
Front Row: Landsknecht, War Magus, _________
Back Row: Gunner, Alchemist
This party has all of the essentials. You’ve got a healer (war magus), a strong physical attacker (landsknecht), a character who can deal major back row damage and bind enemies (gunner) and a dedicated magic user (alchemist). You probably noticed there’s a blank spot though. That’s because any other class available at the game’s outset can work with this party. If you’re want to add a troubadour or a hexer, stick one in the back. If you want a ronin or protector, then put one up front. I’d personally recommend a dark hunter placed in the front row, to increase changes of hitting enemies with status effects, but anything works.

No Need for TP
Front Row: Landsknecht, Protector, Beast
Back Row: Gunner, Troubadour
This party is one which allows you to conserve your TP for FOEs and boss fights. As long as you have the troubadour equipped with some sort of bow, all of the characters in the party should be able to deal a decent amount of damage without resorting to special skills. Then, if you do come across an enemy resistant to physical attacks, have the troubadour sing a song to add an elemental atribute to weapons and the gunner use elemental shots.

Front Row: War Magus, War Magus
Back Row: Alchemist, Hexer, Alchemist
If you’re facing a boss, a large group of FOEs or are just heading to a floor where a lot of enemies susceptible to magic are, then this party might just be for you. War maguses are pretty hardy, and can handle the party’s healing. The hexer can be used to put detrimental status effects on the enemies, which the war maguses can exploit. As for the alchemists, have each focus in a specific area of magic, so you’re covered in case some enemies are resistant.

Hunters-Gatherers
Front Row: Beast, Beast
Back Row: Survivalist, Hexer/Medic, Survivalist
If you’re taking care of some of the bar’s fetch quests, then have this party ready. Beasts can learn fetch, which will allow them to chop, mine or take up to five times in one day at one of those points. Survivalists can learn to chop, mine and take, so you’ll be able to gather quite a lot very quickly with two in your party. The hexer or medic may seem like an odd choice, since both classes can only learn take, but they also have the scavenge passive skill, which means you’ll get more items from battles. I’d recommend the hexer over the medic, since pets have healing skills, but it’s up to you.

Jenni’s Picks
Front Row: Ronin, Dark Hunter, Beast/Landsknecht
Back Row: Gunner, Alchemist
My personal favorite party is great for incapacitating enemies and dealing a lot of damage. The gunner/dark hunter combo allows you to bind up enemies quickly. The ronin and beast (or landsknecht - depends on if I want to carry healing items or not) handle most of the physical damage. The lone alchemist takes care of the magic. It isn’t good for beginners, but if you’re a seasoned Etrian Odyssey player you may want to give it a try.
