When the original Gears of War saw release on Microsoft’s fledgling Xbox 360, gamers were quick to praise its fast action and stellar graphics. Positive comments such at these from players, along with glowing reviews from critics, enabled Gears of War to become one of the 360’s top-selling games and earned it a notable place in Microsoft’s franchise arsenal alongside Halo.
Cliff Bleszinski, design director for Epic Games, the company responsible for Gears of War, wants to make sure that casual gamers are able to experience the upcoming sequel. One feature that he emphasized in hopes of making this happen is the ability to experience the story mode alongside another player. In an interview with Reuters transcribed by Yahoo, he made it clear that causal players should “have the opportunity to finish the game and be fans of the characters and setting.”
Of course, Gears of War, for all its positives, is not the really a point-of-entry game to suggest to your little brother, sister or even parents who might be eager to gain a greater understanding of your chosen hobby. Not only are the images in the game a bit too grisly for most but the game’s inherent complex controls and interface prevent casual players from gaining a great understanding of what this experience has to offer.
It remains to be seen whether or not Gears of War 2, which will see release for the Xbox 360 this November, will be more player-friendly than its predecessor but the fact that Bleszinski is attempting to take these steps shows the effort that publishers and developers are making to ensure that more people engage in their products.
As long as Gears of War 2 does not turn out to be as easy as Wii Music, I am all for this new direction.
