Considering the news of so many game companies closing or downsizing, any individual who confidently held the opinion that the game industry is recession-proof has to eat considerable amounts of crow as his or her theory continue to be proven erroneous.
However, there is one individual who continues to believe that this industry is recession-proof, and that is John Riccitiello, the CEO of EA. In fact, according to 1UP, he believes that the industry will eventually find its way out of this economic mess (despite his own company, EA, reporting sizable losses and layoffs).
Speaking to Gamespot UK, Riccitiello made it clear why he believes that this recession will ultimately help the gaming industry. To him, the recession will “force “the riffraff” to go out of business, reducing the number of poor quality games on store shelves, and allowing developers who “act decisively” to set themselves up more securely for the future.”
That can either be interpreted as sound advice or a blatant attempt by EA to toot their own horn towards their own accomplishments. At the moment, they have made it clear that despite their own negative experiences with the economy, they plan to continue introducing new properties, even though not all of them have been rewarded with successful sales.
What is EA’s advice for developers who want to avoid challenging times? According to Riccitiello, developers should “decide what’s important, invest in those programs, and cut the rest.”
Sounds like a legitimate plan of action. Here is hoping that his company, along with other developers, can successfully implement it.
