EA and Sony defend Madden 08 on PS3

by Pulkit Chandna on Aug 15, 2007 at 02:15 AM

Madden NFLThe PS3 version of Madden NFL 08 has instigated a fierce defense of the machine from both EA and Sony.

The PS3 is taking fire because, as some claim, Madden looks much better on rival Xbox 360 and has superior AI and overall smoothness. The PS3 version has been reported to run at a yawning 30 fames per second, while the 360 version breezes at 60 fps.

Meanwhile, EA has attributed the inferiority of games on PS3 compared to the 360 versions to the lack of knowledge about the PS3 among game developers since most developers have spent 3 1/2 years developing games for the Xbox360 which has provided them more time to find ways to exploit the console’s potential. Likewise,  EA believes that, as developers get the hang of the PS3, they will be able to conceive better games for it as well.

Even Sony has not been far behind in shielding its console from criticism. Sony’s director of corporate communications. Dave Karraker, has refuted Ubisoft’s claims that the PS3 can’t handle complex AI. He said in his lash-out that the cell processor is more than capable of producing complex AI and the upcoming game Heavenly Sword will best vindicate his point.

It seems that Sony and Microsoft are entangled in a two-and-fro war of words while Nintendo has been keeping silent and enjoying unprecedented success with the Wii and DS. It would be great if, instead, the two console manufacturers put their money where their corporate mouths are. Even so and as EA has rightly suggested, developers definitely need to spend more time with the PS3 in order to fully exploit its innate power.
