E3’s “worst kept secret” was made official by Sony’s CEO Kaz Harai at Sony’s E3 2009 press conference. Besides calling it the “worst kept secret of E3” at the press conference, Hirai referred to the PSP Go as, “An object of desire and an object of functionality.”
The PSP Go will be released in North America on October 1, 2009, for $249. It will be release din Japan on November 1, 2009. It will not replace the PSP-3000 or UMDs (so you’ll still be able to get hard copies of games). The PSP Go is meant for people who want live a more digital lifestyle without dealing with disc-based media.
The PSP contains the same operating system as its predecessors but is 50% smaller and 40% lighter than the original PSP-1000. The inside of the PSP has 16GB of internal flash memory, WiFi, integrated Bluetooth and a new memory stick micro media port that can be used to expand the memory of the handheld.
Sony has replaced it’s original media manger software with a new program called Media Go. You use Media Go to access the PlayStation Store from a PC and transfer media to the PSP Go.
Another new program is called Sense Me that analyzes music on your handheld and create a play list based on your mood. This service will launch for all PSPs Fall 2009.
Harai also said all games in the future will be distributed through retail and through the PlayStation Store. To help generate content for the system, Sony is dropping the price of the toolkit by 80% to, as Harai explained, “bring all kinds of new content to the PSP.”
