Last E3 (2008) we reported that the rumors for a new Star Wars MMO were finally confirmed. This E3 (2009), convention goers were treated to a lovely surprise consisting actual details on the upcoming MMO (release date yet to be announced) that’s being developed by BioWare titled Star Wars: The Old Republic.
BioWare was the company behind Neverwinter Nights, a great D&D-based game. It was also behind the better half of the Knights of the Old Republic story for Star Wars. The company has a history of trying to make deep games that make you care about the universe of the game as well as the characters.
With incredible theatrical flair, they definitely knew how to grab people’s attention without making them wonder what was going to be shown at EA’s press conference. The memorable Star Wars music sounded over the speakers as a group of “Jedi” entered from stage left, stage right and two from within the audience. The two who entered from the audience revealed their faces and let the world know about The Old Republic.
One of the first details that was brought up was how massive the undertaking would be. The game has thousands of spoken roles and a lot of different possibilities to follow through the game. Just in terms of the different classes, it sounds like it’s following the class list for the Star Wars pen-and-paper RPG. However, that isn’t going to be the thing that is really interesting.
Each class apparently has its own storyline. There is a lot that will be going into each aspect of the game and since it’s backed by a better development company it looks to be an incredible and worthwhile endeavor. Then again, people thought the same thing about Star Wars Galaxies, which fell apart on arrival so we’ll have to hold back on judgment until it’s actually released.
One of the biggest things that they revealed though, is the trailer (see below). It is, in a word, beautiful and gives a fairly good feel for how epic they’ll be trying to make the game in terms of look, action and feeling. I, for one, can’t wait to for this to come out.
