One of the coolest games at E3 this year was The Conduit, a Wii first-person shooter that could easily pass as a first-gen Xbox 360 title. I was able to get my little paws on the multiplayer mode (which was showing in a very cool sci-fi looking booth tucked right next to Bethesda’s giant tent-thing). The bottom line: This game is looking hot. It’s fast, fun, and an ultra-smooth multiplayer experience.
We tried out two modes: ASE football (where players all scramble to find and hold the ASE orb for as long as possible in order to score major points) and the more traditional deathmatch mode.
The controls were silky-smooth and quick, a must for this type of gameplay. You aim and shoot with the WiiMote and move and chuck grenades with the nunchuck. Switching weapons is as easy as hitting the D-pad, and since all shooting and grenade-hurling is gestural, the experience is truly immersive. Another cool thing about the control scheme is that everything is very adjustable. When I was having an issue with the super-loose default setting, I was quickly able to re-adjust from an in-game menu screen.
This really is a Halo-esque multiplayer shooter working perfectly on Wii, something that doesn’t even seem possible, given the system’s anemic online offerings.
While I was sitting there fragging fools (and honestly, getting my butt whupped as well), someone came over and left a “Best of E3” award on one of the booth’s monitors. Sounds about right to me.
