E3 2009: Best of the PS3

PS3 E3

E3 2009 is now over and Los Angeles has gone back to its normal number of geeks per square mile. Us geeks have now migrated to the internet to let you know our take on the best PS3 showings at E3.

Even though the Sony press conference was one of the last press conferences to be held, it did its job of hyping up the PlayStation brand very well. Sony spent the first half talking about the PS2 and PSP with a sprinkling of PS3 news here and there while the latter half of the presentation was ripe with the future of the PS3. Here’s a summary of the best parts.

Assassin’s Creed 2

Assassin's Creed 2
Assassin’s Creed 2 is not a PS3 exclusive game but it’s on this list because of a very interesting fact. During Ubisoft’s press conference the previous day (June 1, 2009) no gameplay footage from Assassin’s Creed 2 was shown. There was only a trailer present to curb our appetites for Ezio’s assassin-ness. The PS3 was the first console to show actual gameplay being demoed live on stage which makes one wonder why wasn’t it present anywhere else. The audience “ohhed” and gasped at some of the actions Ezio could perform such as the double stealth kill using the concealed blades in his arm and the use of the flying machine. This could be a sign of a more aggressive Sony to associate big third party titles with the PS3 just as Microsoft manages to do with several games for Xbox 360.

God of War III

It’s no surprise that God of War III made a big splash last week at E3 and it did so with good reason. The demo that was shown featured Kratos in the middle of a battle between the Titan of destruction Perses and the sun God Helios. During the demonstration the graphics and detail of Kratos and the environment was easily the most jaw dropping feature. Kratos’s brutality was also showcased as he stabbed his way across harpies, gutted a centaur type creature and slowly ripped off the head of Helios. There’s still a lot of information that hasn’t been released about God of War III but this demo met our high expectations. Sony just may hit a home run with this exclusive title. God of War III is coming out in March 2010.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Uncharted 2 is another exclusive PS3 franchise that will be available by year’s end. Uncharted was and still is one of the prettiest games available on the PS3 and it appears Uncharted 2 has raised the bar. The cinematic feel of the game is back along with the same voice actors and brilliant bodily animations of the characters.

ModNation Racers

ModNation Racers

I appreciated the idea behind ModNation Racers more than the game itself. Sony is using the Play. Create. Share. philosophy that was made popular by LittleBigPlanet and is turning it into a platform. ModNation Racers is going to be a game that is expanded through its community. It takes the tried and true formula of competitive cart racing and adds in totally customizable features. The demonstrators showed us it’s possible to create a brand new racing track in five minutes without any tedious effort. It’s way too early to tell whether ModNation Racers will have close to the same gaming cultural impact LBP had. This new genre encouraged by Sony could mark the start of a new widespread concept to extend the shelf life of games.

Agent and Final Fantasy XIV

One thing we didn’t expect to see at E3 was a new current generation Final Fantasy game. Jack Trenton shocked everyone when he announced the game and showed a teaser trailer. Final Fantasy XIV will be an online game and the PS3 will be the only console that will have it (PC will get the game too).

Agent is a new PS3-exclusive game from Rockstar North, the team that gave us the Grand Theft Auto series. It’s an espionage game that takes place in the 1970’s. Rockstar has always provided consoles with great games and nabbing this title is a big feather in Sony’s cap.

Prototype Wand Controller

The one bit of hardware announced at E3 was the prototype controller for the PS3. This controller gives you the illusion of wielding just about any weapon you can imagine. Sony showed off a plasma whip, pistol and a bow to name a few. Perhaps when this peripheral launches it will be able to work in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye camera.

As you can probably tell by now this list pretty much consisted of every game Sony had during the press conference. It’s just so hard to leave a game out because they all helped to make the PS3 software presentation a great one.
