826NYC, a nonprofit organization which runs a writing workshop for kids between the ages of 6~18, is going to be holding a very special fundraiser on May 9, 2008 at 7pm. A huge Dungeons & Dragons event, called “Dungeons & Dragons (With Girls!), is going to be held at their 372 5th Avenue center in Brooklyn, New York. People over the age of 21 are invited to register at the official site and attend the event.
Girls get to play for free, but guys have to pay $25. All the money goes to support the 826NYC center though, so its for a good cause. Once you’ve registered, you can donate real money to purchase gold for your character to use at the event.
Even though I have never played D&D (and really have no desire to), I would definitely attend this event to help support the writing center. Well, if it happened in the city I lived in, I would. Especially the whole ‘girls play free’ thing. Its a nice incentive. The event runs from seven to midnight and the informative site states that some snacks (specifically Doritos and Pepsi) will provided.
The 826NYC writing center and its tutors, programs and workshops are completely free. While the focus is on students and assisting with papers and professional writing skills, many of the workshops cover fun topics like comic book or short story writing. There center is also home to the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co., which sells assorted items handy for the mighty men and women among us.
