In browsing the web, I stumbled upon a mention of the latest Dr. Who spinoff on the Who’s Who section of Hartbreak Films web site. Hartbreak is the production company created and run by Paula Hart and her daughter, Melissa Joan Hart of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Clarissa Explains it All fame.

From the site:

Hartbreak is also involved in the development of a live action kids series K9 featuring based on the character from Dr. Who written by Bob Baker (Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Wererabbit).

According to the site Adventures in Time and Space, the series, simply titled K9 , should already be in production in Australia.

gamertell k9 poster If/When it airs, this will be the third spin-off from the uber successful and super cool current incarnation of the Doctor Who TV series produced by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). The other shows being Torchwood and not-nearly-as-interesting The Sarah Jane Adventures. An animated serial titled The Infinite Quest features the Doctor and Martha Jones in short segments for a children’s magazine style show about Dr. Who titled Totally Doctor Who. Other spinoffs, either rumored of canceled, include Young Doctor Who and Rose Tyler: Earth Defense.

The Hartbreak site does go into some detail about the show but not about the company’s involvement with K9 (which the site calls K9 Adventures and is reflected in the show’s logo on the site). Chances are pretty dern good that Hartbreak will help to bring the series to the US. From the site (and please don’t blame the grammar on me):

Introducing K9 ... the World’s favorite robot in the guise of a dog!

The new series has shades of the TV classic “Lost in Space” as crew of the ship travel the universe, stumbling across races of exotic aliens and defying menacing dictators who not only have to face the human crew of the ship but the robot dog himself.

A sense of subtle moral right from wrong will be written into the stories which will be full on family entertainment.

The crew comprises a mixed bag of characters that will appeal to all ages; ALOCUM, the ship’s captain early 30’s and a mystery! DJINN, a holographic digital GENIE, AD, A.D., a mischievous young male teen runaway and of course K9, a robot made from “Living Metal”!

This new Live action/CGI series comes from the pen of Bob Baker, the writer of the Oscar Winning WALLACE & GROMIT Films.

No word yet as to whether or not this will be turned into a game, much like the Wallace and Gromit movies and the Sabrina series.
