CNET’s Don Reisinger is sick of the me-too mentality in our industry. In a post titled “Why I’m boycotting first-person shooters,” Reisinger lays out his annoyance with the “suits” running development studios and the Hollywood mentality dominating the once-creative and quirky world of videogames. is plan of action: boycott FPS titles, since he sees them as the most offensive culprit.
From the post:
He then goes on to say he understands that obviously, games that sell will be the ones companies will continue to make; but that Nintendo’s innovative approach seems to be working, so there are no excuses.
I do agree with most of what he’s saying, but I think he’s giving Nintendo far too much credit. If Nintendo were truly sticking by it’s credo of innovation, we would be seeing more quality, innovative titles instead of mega-selling crap like Wii Play or several of the system’s top sellers. They’re making good on their promise with 1st party software, but the 3rd party and downloadable content situations are hardly ideal. And yes, I agree with his boycott on the FPS genre. After Portal and BioShock last year, the bar for creativity (at least in terms of story in BioShock‘s case) was raised too high, and very few FPS games have the power to excite me anymore. I’m with you, Don.
