It would appear that EA seriously dropped the ball on the canned The Dark Knight game, according to GameDaily. A videogame adaptation of the ultra-smash hit was reportedly in the works, but it got axed due to “quality concerns, the controversy surrounding star Heath Ledger’s death, and less than optimistic sales projections” ouch.
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter (the perennial game blog favorite) has estimated that the game could’ve sold 4 million units, due to the film’s incredible popularity. As such, EA basically just lost out on $70 million of the total $100 million projected for that many units ($30 million would’ve gone to Warner Brothers for the licensing deal). Apparently, the company had cold feet over previous superhero flops: the Batman Begins and Superman Returns games.
Ouch again. EA has been making smart moves lately (just look at all it’s new IP’s like Dead Space), but this definitely wasn’t one of them. However, I always give props to publishers who can projects over “quality concerns” - the world is a better place without another generic me-too action game, The Dark Knight license or not.
